Obama considered joining military, regrets abortion answer

Barack Obama says his answer about abortion at the Saddleback Church forum was “probably” too flip.
During separate televised interviews last month, Pastor Rick Warren asked the two presidential candidates when a baby gets human rights. Obama replied that the question is “above my pay grade,” while John McCain won love from the right by saying quickly, “At the moment of conception.”
Now, Obama tells ABC’s George Stephanopoulos in an interview taped for “This Week”: “What I intended to say is that, as a Christian, I have a lot of humility about understanding when does the soul enter into … It’s a pretty tough question. And so, all I meant to communicate was that I don’t presume to be able to answer these kinds of theological questions.”
In the ABC interview, Obama goes on to give the answer he wishes he’d given: “What I do know is that abortion is a moral issue, that it’s one that families struggle with all the time. And that in wrestling with those issues, I don’t think that the government criminalizing the choices that families make is the best answer for reducing abortions.
“I think the better answer — and this was reflected in the Democratic platform — is to figure out, how do we make sure the young mothers, or women who have a pregnancy that’s unexpected or difficult, have the kind of support they need to make a whole range of choices, including adoption and keeping the child.
In an electric interview, Obama suggested again and again that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain’s running mate, is unprepared for the job. At one point, he mocked her camp’s suggestion that Alaska’s proximity to Russia gives her foreign-policy credentials: “Well, look. You know, I actually knew that Russia was next to Alaska, as well. I saw it on a map.”
“It’s not a qualification?” Stephanopoulos press.
“I don’t think it is,” Obama replied.
But Obama’s team recognizes that picking a fight over experience isn’t necessarily in Obama’s interest, and he acknowledged as much in the interview: “You know, this whole résumé contest that’s been going back and forth is not what the American people are looking for.”
Obama also accused the McCain campaign of cynicism by frequently attacking him and then denying it: “I mean, these guys love to throw a rock and hide their hand.”
However, Obama said he did not agree with the commentators who saw “racial code” in the Republicans’ mocking reference to his early work as a “community organizer” during their convention.
“You know, I didn’t hear that,” Obama told Stephanopoulos. “I mean, I just think that there is a — for folks who suddenly have tried to grab the change banner, you know, they’ve got a very traditional view of what service means.
“You know, it means, running for office and being a politician, I guess. Or serving in the military. I mean, those are the two options that I think they’ve talked about. I think there are a whole lot of people — young people, in particular — who are teaching in underserved schools or working in a hospital in need, you know, volunteering for their community, that think that’s part of the change that we need. That’s part of the energy that we’ve been able to mobilize in this campaign.”
Obama disclosed that he had once considered serving in the military.
“You know, I actually did,” Obama said. “I had to sign up for Selective Service when I graduated from high school. And I was growing up in Hawaii. And I have friends whose parents were in the military. There are a lot of Army, military bases there.
“And I actually always thought of the military as an ennobling and, you know, honorable option. But keep in mind that I graduated in 1979. The Vietnam War had come to an end. We weren’t engaged in an active military conflict at that point. And so, it’s not an option that I ever decided to pursue.”

Here is why Meagan chose this article…
I believe this article is worth sharing because it emphasizes on an issue that is more than just a political topic, but a moral issue that has a deeper meaning outside of the campaign trail. For me as an open-minded and non-religious individual, I cannot help but side with Obama, as I am unsure that humans have the capability of knowing when human rights begin because it truly is a philosophical idea that may never have a concrete answer. Obama should not regret his answer at all, because I believe McCain is being somewhat pompous by claiming he knows human rights begin at conception, ignoring the fact that it is an issue on moral grounds, which favors opinion over fact. Abortion will most likely remain an issue beyond this campaign because it is a concern that Americans, as well as humanity as a whole, can relate as people are faced with moral dilemmas such as this everyday.

I agree with Meagan on this issue. I don’t think McCain understands how truly hard it is to raise a child at a young age. I admire those women who are able to but understand the reasons why some young lady’s might not be able to. As far as rights go McCain seems to be more concerned with the rights of a baby but is forgetting the rights of the women who has to carry a child. Abortions will always be around so why not make them as safe as possible. Some people will go to the exstream to i dont know if get rid of the baby but its the only way i can think to put it. When some one is despret enough there is nothing they wouldn’t do. I would rather see some one get an abourtion done safley than in a back aly some where with a scetchy person claiming to know how to. If there are not clinics than there are people who would be willing to do that and put them selves in danger.

i agree as well. how dare the government ever tell anyone what to do with their body. for example, if i wanna pump my blood filled with illicit drugs, become a vegan, or kill myself, no government will ever tell me i can’t, and if they do i know i wont listen. i have many loved ones who have had to face pregnancy before they are out of high school, their decisions aside, i couldn’t imagine being forced into a decision like that. i have also gone to abortion clinics, and it is sad and scary that people feel their religion and views should be rained upon other people. people act irrational and although they may feel they are being compassionate, they are not. they are not compassionate for the ones making the decision or the possible child. if they were, they would understand it is a personal matter. and that is it.

I like how Obama puts forward the concept of how serious some things are being taken that should not be. But then he goes the step forward and actually puts the focus where he beleives it should be.
On the issue of abortion “Above my pay grade” certainly sums it up for me. It’s not a choice to be made by any person, institution, religion, or administraton save for the one whose body it concerns.

I strongly agree with what meagan had to say about the issue. She covered everything that i would want to say about it, but i will comment about Obama. Obama is very sneaky and deseptive about what he has to say about issues, he is great at avoiding the question and has also been caught changing his views on an issue depending on the crowd at hand. I dont’t agree with McCain’s point on views on issues but he is firm with his answers.

Who are we to decide moral standards? If I may quote Stephen “It’s not a choice to be made by any person, institution, religion, or administration save for the one whose body it concerns” Does this not also concern the baby? Hasn’t the baby have a right on moral standards? What if this baby wants to live? Does the mother have the right to murder her child because it’s inconvenient even though she was the one who had premarital sex? Should the baby be murdered because of life’s inconvience? If she can not take care of the child there are many families willing to adopt!

I have to completely agree with Tirzah! Did you know that when a woman aborts her child she is more likely to commit suicide? Is it worth it to take a life and harm yourself?
September 17, 2008 at 2:30 am
We think that life starts when a child takes it’s first breath. But is this true? Some scientists or those in the medical field might say this is true. But life starts at conception! Many people believe that they escape the consequences by having an abortion, this is not so. You have taken a human’s life whether you’ed admit it or not. That child is a person and entitled to have a life no matter at what stage of growth he/she is at. Did you know that in our courts if a woman who is with child is murdered, the murderer is guilty of not one death but two deaths. Now one must ask himself, why is that? Why does the law state it is murder when a wanted unborn child is killed but says it is alright to kill a unwanted unborn child. Our socioty is really messed up. Youth today are taught they can murder unborn children.

I totally agree with Megan! this was a good article to pick. It shows the two canidates points of views on the matter of abortion. Abortion is a huge iffy subject that only the person having the abortion can decide if its right or wrong. I dont agree at all with MCcain saying that human rights start at conception. How would he know when human rights start or not. Abortion is more of moral argument then a political argument. It has a lot to do with religion, who you are as a person and whether or not you, yourself believe in abortion.

I guess I throw my opinions out on the table before I do what I planned for this. Well I agree with Tirzah. Abortion, no matter how you look at it, is murder. The definition of abortion according to the American Heritage New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition is “The deliberate termination of a pregnancy, usually before the embryo or fetus is capable of independent life. In medical contexts, this procedure is called an induced abortion and is distinguished from a spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) or stillbirth.” As you see from the definition, it does not say that the embryo or fetus is still not alive but that it cannot maintain life on its own since it is not capable of independent life. So in other words, even though the embryo or fetus is not capable of independent life, it is still alive. Just in case some people are not aware, within 24-hours after fertilization, the egg begins to divide rapidly into many cells and as we all know for a cell to do something like this, it needs to be alive which shows why life starts at conception and just to throw in another fact, the baby’s first nerve cells form within 3 weeks into the pregnancy and we all know what nerves do.

Punsihing someone for having premarital sex is ignorant…It is crucial to keep an open mind and realize that while it is a personal choice to follow a certain religion, it should also be a personal choice to spare a child from having to be brought up unwanted. If someone feels it is wrong, than by all means don’t participate in it. But at the same time, don’t prevent others from beliving in their own ways of life.

Now for what I was going to do. A lot of people talk about religion these days. The only thing I am going to say on that right now is that if people really read and understood the Bible, they could reap so many benefits from it since the Bible provides guidelines that can protect us. To receive those benefits, though, we must also accept the responsibilities. Anyway I am going to address what the Bible itself has to say about abortion and will use scriptures from different translations and not just one. The first scripture I’ll use will be from Psalms 139: 13-16 which states “You kept me screened off in the belly of my mother . . . Your eyes saw even the embryo of me, and in your book all its parts were down in writing” – New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures. As you can see from the scripture, God views the life of a child precious even during the very early stages of development after conception. The next scripture is Exodus 21:22,23 which states “If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life” – King James Version. As you can see this scripture brings out that a person would be called to account for injury to an unborn child or the mother. Also if the child or mother were to die then the person who caused the death of that child or the mother would have to give a life for a life. 1 John 3:15 brings out how serious is the willful taking of a human life for a reason not authorized by God by stating in the latter part of the verse “no murderer has eternal life abiding in him” – New American Standard Bible. Some might wonder, “What is a doctor’s opinion says that allowing a pregnancy to go full term would be harmful to the health of the mother?” Well that still doesn’t justify abortion since sometimes medical opinions are wrong. For example, would it be right to kill a person just because he might harm someone else? No it wouldn’t. But if at the time of childbirth a choice must be made between the life of the mother and the child, it is up to the individuals concerned to make that choice. Anyway, I guess I’ve covered enough for now.

No one wants a child to be unwanted but that doesn’t mean the child shouldn’t have a chance to live. That is why we have baby safe haven laws. That way if a mother feels she just cannot have her child she can just give the child to the hospital, police, fireman with no questions asked and the child will be found a home were the child can be adopted by a family who wants another child or even a family that wants a child but cannot have one because one of them is infertile or for other reasons.

Well there are alot of good points being made. I think abortion is a subject that alot of people have different views on. Some people are completley against it and would never murder the unborn. Others find that abortion is something alot of “pregnant teens” are facing these days and should follow through with… I think it’s impossible to resolve the abortion crisis at stake with just the election, because everyone has their own choices and beliefs as to what they think is the right thing to do.

I have to agree with miguel 100%. The desision to take the life of a human beinging does not belong to us, but belongs to God alone.

I dont really see how someone could even get pregnate in this day in age if they really didnt want to. Birth control is handed out for free in some schools even and its just rediculous the amount of young girls who are still getting pregnate and then decidint they can not care for the baby. i feel that if abortion wasnt an option for these girls maybe they would take he correct procautions and not get knocked up
September 20, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Allison makes a good point. i don’t think abortion should be used as a form of birth control. people should be responsible about sex.
that being said there are people who are raped and those people don’t really get a say in weather or not a condom is used and while there is the day after pill that has to be taken the day after so that may cause some issues.
As for teen girls while i don’t agree that they should be off having sex at a young age and if they are having it they should be miture about it some girls can’t go on birth control. there are those who cant talk to a parent about getting it or have health risks that on a rare occasion prevent them from being able to take birth control.
and finally my mother was on birth control used a condom and spermisde when having sex with my father and still got pregnate not only with me but my sister and brother so sometimes accidents happen and it should be an option. a last resort but still offered.

you think god can tell people what to do? its his choice alone? what sense does that make? il fill you in, none at all. it is the persons choice to abort a child. i am completely against abortion in most cases except rape cases or if the mother or child will be harmed more by being born. but the government has no right to tell someone they cant have an abortion. and if they ban abortion then women will still find a way to get them. illegal abortions are dangerous, but im sure a desperate women will do what ever she can to get rid of the child if that is her wish. im not saying i agree with that, but its the truth. women will get abortions whether they are legal or not which is going to be more unsafe.
